Our boat – and us – are ready for an amazing summer

Most everything onboard the Azure Mer works, and in a boat that is approaching 25 years old, that is surprisingly good news. I’m pretty sure it’s because we had help from our daughter Meredith and her fiancé, Kyle, (a professional mariner) when we (they) winterized all the systems and put the boat to bed for the winter last November.

We are looking forward to a fun cruising season on the Great Lakes. We’re headed to Mackinac Island for Memorial Day weekend and, of course, making our way to the North Channel for the annual GLCC Rendezvous in Little Current in mid-July.

We plan a few stops along the way, including some time in Les Cheneaux Islands, up to Sault St. Marie, and the Wilderness Rally JR at Harbor Island (NC-2) on June 30.

Keep commenting on our Harbor Reports, as your cruising plans involve visiting marinas and anchorages over the summer. Aboard Azure Mer, the GLCC Harbor Reports are the lifeblood of our cruising plans.

Even though we may have visited a port before, I still pull up a PDF of that port’s Harbor Report to refresh my memory of how best to enter the harbor, what may have changed, or just to make sure I recalled that harbor correctly.

You, our members, help make the GLCC Harbor Reports the best place for information about towns, marinas and anchorages on the Great Lakes. Feel free to comment on changing water levels, new restaurants, and anything you find fun and interesting.

If you don’t know how to make updates, reach out to Director / Log Book Editor and Port Captain Julie Thorndycraft at glccharborreports@gmail.com.

Our summer events are shaping up to be a lot of fun and should be full of some great camaraderie for our membership. Be sure to check out the event calendar here: https://www.glcclub.com/events-list

I wish we could get our boat to our old stomping grounds of Lake Erie in time for the Lake Erie Murder Mystery, June 12-15. It’s chaired by Jim and Janice Ehrman and headed to Middle Bass Island (E-18.5). It looks to be a fabulous whodunit adventure.

Finally, the 60th GLCC Anniversary Rendezvous in Little Current (NC-17), July 13-17, is shaping up to be a historic club event, marking the 60th anniversary of GLCC’s first modern Rendezvous. The original event was also at Little Current. Port Captains Debby and Jib Turner, along with Vice Commodore Craig Shantz, have put together what looks like an awesome event.

They have worked hard to make sure slips are available for all who want to attend. Registration closes June 10. I hope to see you there.

Have a great spring launch, and be safe out there!
