The Great Lakes Foundation’s Board of Directors approved two new grants from the Great Lakes Foundation at its April 2025 meeting. The grants are:

Rossport Harbour Marina

This marina has operated since the 1880s on the north shore of Lake Superior. It is one of the few places Great Lakes cruisers can find a dock along this rustic shore.

The Canadian government turned the marina over to a non-profit group in 1997. This group of volunteers is dedicated to providing dockage for both commercial and recreational boats.

Over the years, the docks have deteriorated, and the marina began a revitalization project. The cost is about $500,000 CAD. The Canadian government is paying for most of the work. The Great Lakes Foundation will cover the shortage of about $18,000 CAD.

The Great Lakes Foundation grant will allow the project to move forward. Work is scheduled to start this July.

Burchfield Penny Art Center

The museum (BPAC), in Buffalo, NY, supports artists of the Niagara and western New York state region. It welcomes more than 200,000 visitors annually.

The BPAC requested a grant from the GL Foundation for $2,000 to support an exhibition called Against the Grain, scheduled to open this year. This photographic exhibition tells of the work and lives of “scoopers,” the laborers who for two centuries manually emptied Great Lakes grain cargo ships. The photos were provided by Mark Maio, an award-winning photographer.
