‘Enjoy every remaining sunset’

September has a way of reminding us that change is always around the corner. The days are getting shorter, the air becomes a little cooler, and across the Great Lakes, boaters begin thinking about the approaching end of another cruising season.

Yet one thing every sailor knows is that changing conditions do not necessarily mean the journey is over. Sometimes they simply require us to adjust.

A good captain does not become frustrated because the wind changes direction. The course is corrected. The speed may be adjusted. The crew becomes more attentive. But the destination remains.

Life works much the same way.

There are seasons when everything seems to cooperate with our plans, and there are seasons when unexpected winds begin to blow. Health changes. Families change. Careers change. Relationships change. Dreams change. Even the people who once traveled beside us may eventually head toward different harbors.

The challenge is learning how to remain steady while much around us is changing.

On the water, steadiness comes from experience, preparation, and confidence in the vessel beneath you. In life, steadiness comes from knowing what anchors you — ayour values, your relationships, your sense of purpose, and the lessons gathered from all the miles already traveled.

Perhaps September is a good month to remember that we do not have to fear every change in the wind. Some winds push us toward places we never expected to visit. Some storms reveal strength we did not know we possessed.

And sometimes the changing season simply reminds us to appreciate the journey while we are still under way.

So as summer slowly gives way to fall and another Great Lakes cruising season begins moving toward its closing chapters, enjoy every remaining sunset, every quiet harbor, every conversation around the dock, and every mile beneath the keel.

Keep your hands steady. Keep your eyes forward.

And whatever direction the winds of life may blow, keep navigating toward the things that truly matter.
