Summer on the Great Lakes: A season worth savoring

The Great Lakes are inarguably among the world's most remarkable cruising grounds. Consider just a few noteworthy sites: the granite shorelines of the North Channel and Georgian Bay to the quiet anchorages of Lake Superior, the historic harbors of Lake Huron, the vibrant ports along lakes Michigan and Erie, and Lake Ontario’s majestic Thousand Islands at the gateway to the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Every voyage offers something new. Whether your summer plans include an ambitious multi-week cruise or a series of weekend escapes, the Lakes remind us that extraordinary destinations are often closer than we think. The Club exists for that reason.

One of the enduring strengths of the Great Lakes Cruising Club is the willingness of members to share their knowledge and experiences. Our Harbor Reports, cruising guides, annual Rendezvous, educational programs, and fellowship have been built over generations by sailors who believed that helping one another makes every voyage safer and more rewarding. Every updated Harbor Report, every cruising tip shared over coffee on the dock, and every welcoming gesture to a fellow member strengthens the foundation of our club.

As your Commodore, I am continually impressed by the spirit of volunteerism that defines the GLCC. Behind every publication, webinar, Rendezvous, rally, and member service are people who have generously contributed their time and expertise. Their efforts ensure that our Club remains relevant and thriving. We welcome new members and embrace new technologies while honoring the traditions that have served us so well for more than nine decades.

I want to particularly thank the team that put on the terrific 2026 Rendezvous in Duluth/Superior, led by Past Commodore Niels Jensen. And a shout-out goes to Rear Commodore Dee McClure for her great work on the Mackinac Island Rally. Karen I greatly enjoyed both the Rendezvous and the Mac Island Rally. It was great to meet the new members and see many old friends. Check out the articles and photos on both events in this month’s Lifeline. 

We also did a bit of GLCC business at the Rendezvous and have a proposed slate of new officers to be approved at our upcoming Annual General Meeting this October. 

The annual meeting will be in Toledo, OH at the Delta Hotel Oct. 23-25.  I hope you can join us for fun, fellowship and the opportunity to welcome our new leadership team.

As the summer moves toward fall, I encourage each of you to explore. Perhaps it's a harbor you've passed by for years without entering, a secluded anchorage recommended by another member, or a section of shoreline you've always intended to visit. Some of the most memorable cruising stories begin with a simple decision to alter your course by a few miles.

As always, remember that the Great Lakes demand both respect and preparation. Weather can change quickly, and prudent seamanship remains our most valuable asset. Careful planning, current charts, well-maintained equipment, and thoughtful decision-making allow us to enjoy these magnificent waters with confidence. Your fellow GLCC members, the GLCC Harbor Reports, and GLCCSchool webinars can help make your boating adventures safer and more rewarding.

Wherever your wake takes you this season, please take time to connect with fellow GLCC members. Share your experiences, contribute to our Harbor Reports information, participate in a casual meet-up, or simply introduce yourself when you see another Club burgee flying. Those personal connections are the heart of our organization and one of the reasons so many members describe the GLCC as more than a club. It is a family united by a love of cruising.

As the sun sets over another quiet anchorage and the day's voyage becomes tomorrow's memories, we're reminded why we return to these waters year after year. The Great Lakes continue to offer adventure, serenity, challenges, and friendships in equal measure.
