Port Captain Introductions: Cristina & John Staats

Authored by Cindy Badley

Both Cristina (Crissie) and John (Jack) have a long history of sailing the Great Lakes, most notably Lake St. Clair, Lake Huron, Georgian Bay, and the North Channel, in various sailboats, spanning the last 40 years or so. They belong to Crescent Sail Yacht Club on Lake St. Clair, now as non-resident members.

Crissie has sailed in numerous Port Huron to Mackinac single handed races.

Crissie and Jack sailed, for several years, up and down the inter-coastal and over to the Bahamas.

Crissie sailed Iona, their latest boat — a Camper Nicholson 35 — across the Atlantic in 2000, with a crew of two, to be met in Lagos Portugal by her husband. The two of them then sailed extensively in the Mediterranean. The boat was eventually shipped home from eastern Turkey to the US in 2006, and sold in 2017 to some delightful folks in Muskegeon, Mich.

The Staats now boat on a Cape Dory 28 fly bridge, which they keep in St. Igance Harbor (H-78). They make their home on Mackinac Island where their daughter and family live and work.

Crissie and Jack are honored to be Port Captains for St. Ignace, Mich., so stop by sometime!
