Plan your schedules now for a fun 2026
By Commodore Joe McKeown
The excitement of a new cruising season is upon us. That means we are also approaching last call to register for several of our rallies. Now is the time to finalize plans for the Lake Erie Rally, the Mackinac Island Rally, and the Rally at the Soo leading to the Rendezvous.
Each of these events offers a unique opportunity to connect with fellow members and experience some of the finest freshwater cruising anywhere in the world.
New members add new life: Expanding opportunities for Club members to get to know one another is one of our ongoing priorities. It’s exciting to see so many new faces joining us this season. We are looking forward to welcoming a strong group of first-time event attendees — currently making up about 40% of the Mackinac Island Rally registrations.
New members bring fresh energy to our gatherings and strengthen the fabric of our Club.
The Rendezvous is fast approaching: Anticipation continues to build for our 2026 flagship event, the Rendezvous in Duluth/Superior. It promises to be an outstanding gathering on western Lake Superior. Events like this remind us of what makes the Great Lakes Cruising Club unique: a shared passion for boating, a spirit of camaraderie, and a willingness to help one another make the most of our time on the water.
Founders Award winners share adventures: Congratulations to our 2026 Founders Award winners, Elisabeth and Edward Malthouse. This annual award recognizes the best cruising log of a GLCC member on the Great Lakes. It celebrates not only the spirit of adventure, but also the thoughtful documentation and sharing of experiences that help inspire fellow members in planning their own journeys.
Lots to explore in Georgian Bay: If you haven’t yet read it, I encourage you to take a look at the latest cruising article on The Massasauga in Georgian Bay. Dave Spencer has done (another) fabulous job, capturing the essence of this remarkable destination. It’s the kind of piece that makes you want to adjust your plans and include this area in your near-term cruising plans.
… And be safe out there: As you head out this season, I encourage you to cruise safely, support our harbor communities, and take a moment to welcome new members you meet along the way. The strength of our club has always come from the connections we build — on docks, at anchorages, and over shared stories.
I look forward to the GLCC burgees flying this summer and seeing many of you on the water this summer. In the meantime, I wish you fair winds and following seas.
Joe
