Ed and Elisabeth Malthouse are the new Port Captains at Waukegan, IL (M-43).

Ed had been sailing dinghies (mostly Lasers and 420s) for 40 years. He was the first person to take a Laser out when his local sailing club opened each year on May 1, and last person out in October.

Local club rules forbade him from sailing more than a half mile from the base, and he had always been curious about what was beyond the horizon, so in 2018 he enrolled in American Sailing Association bareboat classes and later joined a boat sharing program. He bought a Beneteau Oceanis 35 to be part of the program.

His wife, Elisabeth, also took ASA courses and discovered a love of cruising. While in the boat sharing program, they cruised extensively around the southern part of Lake Michigan each summer from Port Washington to Chicago, and New Buffalo through Grand Haven.

At the end of 2024, they took their boat out of the program to do more extended cruising. During the summer of 2025, they cruised for 65 days up the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron to DeTour, MI, returning home along the northern and western shores of Lake Michigan through Green Bay and the Sturgeon Bay Canal. This summer, they are preparing to visit the North Channel.
