The Club in 2026 is all about community
By Commodore Joe McKeown
The strength of the GLCC is the spirit of fellowship it fosters among cruisers throughout the region. Since 1934, the Club’s mission has centered on sharing information to enhance cruising. Its continuing goal is helping boaters connect with each other, learn from each other, and travel with greater confidence across the Great Lakes.
The Club’s longstanding tradition of cruisers helping cruisers is something we all greatly value, particularly during the busy summer when practical knowledge and friendly advice can make the difference between a smooth trip and a hectic one.
The Club’s extensive Harbor Reports and network of Port Captains continue to be invaluable resources for those planning their next leg of the season. Members have access to detailed, constantly updated reports on more than 1,000 harbors, anchorages, and waterways, along with local knowledge from nearly 200 Port Captains across the cruising grounds. In the Club, there’s always a friend nearby.
These shared insights help all of us cruise more safely, explore more confidently, and enjoy the remarkable diversity of destinations that our Great Lakes offer.
Your help is important. Please update the Club’s Harbor Reports as you cruise this summer. Your insights help others get the most recent information available, thus making their cruising choices safer and more enjoyable.
The GLCC season’s signature event is the 2026 Rendezvous in Duluth and Superior, scheduled for July 10 through 14 at Barkers Island Marina. The event includes seminars, fellowship, a fleet review, and opportunities to explore the Twin Ports while connecting with fellow members from across the Great Lakes cruising community.
The annual Rendezvous captures the very best of what boating organizations can offer: friendship, seamanship, shared experience, and a genuine welcome wherever we travel.
As we move through the height of summer, I encourage each of you to make the most of every opportunity to get out on the water, support one another, and share in the traditions that make our boating community so strong. A helpful tip at the dock, a familiar burgee in a distant harbor, or a conversation exchanged while under way can often become the most memorable part of the season. Those moments of connection are what turn cruising into community. On behalf of our Club leadership, I thank you for the enthusiasm, volunteer spirit, and camaraderie you bring.
As your Commodore, I must note that the Club has several key roles opening this fall, specifically treasurer and secretary. We will have more information available this fall. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact me or past Commodore Doug Jackson. These roles are user-friendly, but oh so important.
In the meantime, I wish you fair winds, safe passages, and many happy memories in the weeks ahead. May your July be filled with friendship, discovery, and the simple pleasure of being under way on these magnificent waters as part of the Great Lakes Cruising Club.
Warm regards,
Joe
