From the Chaplain: October is a time to gather ourselves and reflect

By the Rev. Eric D. Tucker, GLCC Chaplain
October brings a noticeable change across the Great Lakes. The days grow shorter, the air becomes cooler, and the brilliant colors along the shoreline remind us that another cruising season is drawing to a close.
For many members of the Great Lakes Cruising Club, this is the time to return to our home ports, winterize our boats, review our logbooks, and reflect upon the miles traveled and the memories created. We remember peaceful anchorages, beautiful sunsets, welcoming harbors, and the friendships strengthened along the way.
Of course, every season does not unfold exactly as planned. There may have been destinations we never reached; cruises interrupted by weather, mechanical difficulties, health concerns, or unexpected circumstances. Such moments remind us that cruising — as life itself — requires patience, flexibility, courage, and hope.
A wise captain respects changing conditions and knows when it is time to adjust course. Sometimes we move forward with confidence. Sometimes we must wait for better conditions. At other times, we must choose an entirely different route. Changing course is not failure; it is often an act of wisdom.
As the waters grow quiet, may we also take time to quiet our hearts. Let us be thankful for every safe passage, every helping hand, and every friendship formed across the Great Lakes. Let us also remember those among us who may be facing illness, grief, loneliness, or a difficult transition. A telephone call, thoughtful message, or simple act of kindness may become the light that helps someone navigate a dark passage.
As we prepare our vessels for winter, perhaps we can also prepare ourselves for the season ahead. Secure what is valuable. Repair what has been damaged. Release what is no longer needed. Carry forward the lessons, laughter, and love that made this cruising season meaningful.
The boating season may be ending, but friendship, fellowship, and compassion have no off-season. Wherever the coming months may take us, may we remain connected, grateful, and ready to support one another.
May every member of the Great Lakes Cruising Club enjoy peaceful days, safe harbors, warm friendships, and renewed hope for the journeys still ahead.
