From the Chaplain: The lighthouse offers guidance in the storm

Few sights are more comforting to a mariner than the steady presence of a lighthouse. Whether standing on the rugged shoreline of Lake Superior or marking the entrance to a safe harbor, a lighthouse serves a simple but profound purpose: It offers guidance, hope, and reassurance.

Lake Superior commands our respect. Its beauty is breathtaking, yet its weather can change in moments. Calm waters can give way to towering waves, dense fog can obscure the horizon, and even experienced boaters are reminded that nature is both magnificent and humbling.

Life often feels much the same.

Each of us encounters seasons of smooth sailing and seasons when the way ahead is less certain. Challenges arise unexpectedly. Plans change. Loss, illness, uncertainty, and difficult decisions can leave us searching for direction.

 

A lighthouse does not remove the storm, nor does it calm the waves. Instead, it faithfully shines, reminding those on the water that there is still a safe course to follow. It is a symbol of constancy in an ever-changing world.

As we continue enjoying another Great Lakes cruising season, perhaps we can all strive to be a little more like a lighthouse. We can offer encouragement to a fellow boater, lend a helping hand at the dock, share our knowledge with someone new to cruising, or simply extend kindness to a stranger.

Often, the smallest gestures become the brightest lights in another person’s journey.

The Great Lakes Cruising Club has always been more than a collection of boats. It is a community of people who value adventure, stewardship, friendship, and who look out for one another. Those qualities make every harbor feel a little more like home.

As August unfolds, may you find calm seas when possible, wisdom when conditions change, and gratitude for every sunrise, every safe arrival, and every friendship formed along these remarkable waters.
