The 2025 Lake Erie Rally, June 13th – June 15th, with early bird arrival on Thursday, June 12, will be a Murder Mystery weekend.

Candy Peacock and her husband Arthur Plum were seated across from each other on the outdoor patio of The Club enjoying a cup of specialty brewed coffee.  Sort of.  Candy was enjoying her coffee, smiling as she took in the view of the boats in the marina.  Arthur had his nose in the financial section of the newspaper—a newspaper of all things these days!  As an economics professor at an online university, he felt it was imperative to stay abreast of market trends, speculation, and international finance news. Candy shot a sideways glance at him as she wondered why they never seemed to have enough money even though he was always reading about money.  Heavens! By now you’d think he’d learned enough to work for Warren Buffet!  He hated it when she went shopping, as she’d done earlier today.  She only wanted some new jewelry to go with the bright blue dress she’d bought online yesterday from Needless Markup.  It would be wonderful to have something pretty and shiny to wear at the party on Friday to show up Starlet and the others. “Ooops, Scarlett”, she giggled to herself.

Arthur abruptly put down the newspaper and asked “What on earth are you giggling about? You’re always giggling, like everyone in the world is an infernal joke and you’re the only one in on it.  Damned annoying!” Unprepared for this verbal attack, Candy just stared at him. He resumed his tirade “And another thing that’s annoying is your name!”

“My name?” she asked.

“Yes, your name! We’ve been married almost a year now and you still haven’t changed your name on your driver’s license, Social Security card, bank accounts, nothing!”

“Wait a minute!  What the heck do you know about how my name is on any of that stuff? Have you been snooping around in my papers?  Have you broken the passwords and gotten into my bank accounts?”  If possible, her voice was even higher pitched than usual.

Arthur took a deep breath before dropping his voice to reply condescendingly “No, my dear. I wouldn’t dream of bothering to break into your online accounts.  It’s perfectly obvious you haven’t changed your name because all your mail still comes in the name of Peacock.”

She felt stupid.  He’d made her feel stupid.  She hated feeling stupid.  She felt herself flushing a deep red. She blurted out “I haven’t changed my name because I don’t want to! I don’t want to be Candy Plum because the next thing you know that horrible Scarlett starlet would be calling me Candied Plum.”

Arthur gave her a long considering look then went back to reading the paper.

Candy quietly seethed “When the time comes, I’ll show him!  He’ll see I’m not dumb.  We’ll see how mister financial guru deals with that!”

Arthur Plum closed the door to his office and turned on his computer.  The small dispute with his wife at the café left him feeling agitated. This marriage was not turning out as he had hoped. What on earth had he seen in her? Had to be her looks. She was a pretty brunette who dressed well, shoes and purse always matching with jewelry and perfectly made up. Not bad for a woman in her early fifties and on her third husband. He certainly hadn’t married her for her intellect.

He opened up his Excel program and logged into his banking sites. After loading the financial information into his spreadsheets, he let the formulas run their computations. He grimaced at the steady downward trend in the account balance columns, while the monthly bill columns kept getting higher.  Something was going to have to be done about that. He looked toward the closed door separating himself from the rest of the house. He nodded to himself. Yes, he most definitely was going to have to do something about that.

(This is a work of fiction. While much of the story occurs at a real place (Middle Bass Island), the names, characters, and incidents are either the product of the Rally Chairs’ imagination or are used fictitiously, and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business establishments, or events is entirely coincidental.)

On Friday the 13th a body is found on Middle Bass Island. Who is it? How did this happen?  Whodunnit?  Can you solve the mystery?

We hope you join us in June for our GLCC Lake Erie Rally. The registration fee for this fun filled weekend is $126 (USD) and early bird Thursday is an additional $18 (USD).  See more details on the registration page.

Dress up as your favorite sleuth, victim, or villain.  There will be prizes for the games, costume contest, and of course, for the person(s) who figures out how and whodunit.

It’s important to remember you must make your own dock reservation. Go to https://ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/middle-bass-island-state-park-campground   where you can download a map of the marina to help you decide what dock you may prefer.
