Let’s Celebrate the 110 Years of the Rock of Ages Lighthouse!
The 34th Annual Lake Superior Mid-Winter Dinner will be held in Duluth, Minn. (S-187), on January 11, 2020. The highlight of the evening is a presentation about the Rock of Ages Lighthouse by David and Heather Gerth. David and Heather are director and assistant director of the Rock of Ages Lighthouse Preservation Society. They are leading the work of restoration with care, energy, and great skill. Last year, the Great Lakes Foundation (part of the GLCC) awarded a $10,000 grant to the Rock of Ages Lighthouse Preservation Society: https://rockofageslps.org.
Rock of Ages (47°52′00″N, 89°18′48″W) is located 4 miles outside of Washington Harbor in the open waters of Lake Superior. The nearest harbor is Windigo Ranger Station, which is at the southern end of Isle Royale National Park. The lighthouse is located in waters that belong to the park. It was first lit in 1910 (110 years ago!) and automated in 1978. After dinner, we will hear about the progress of the restoration, and the exciting future of this engineering marvel that still guides and protects all of us approaching Isle Royale.
We want to celebrate with you the collaboration between the GLCC, the Rock of Ages Lighthouse Preservation Society, and the National Park Service at Isle Royale. Treat yourself to this special evening. Guests are welcome. We look forward to seeing you there!
