We have just discovered that the Offshore Powerboat Association will be holding races on the St. Clair River abreast St. Clair, Mich., Friday, July 25 - Sunday, July 27, 2014 and they will be closing the river for much of the day. Here is the link: http://www.oparacing.org/race4.html (You may have to paste it in your browser)
From the information on their web site it is not clear which days will be affected. In the schedule at the top of the page it references closures for Friday and Saturday, July 25-26. In the notice at the bottom of the page it references closures for Saturday and Sunday, but has last year's dates. It states that they have received a Coast Guard permit to close the river from 11AM - 6PM. "This closure applies to ALL non-commercial vessel traffic (pleasure and fishing craft)."
We have been caught in the closure for this boat race in the past. Pleasure boats simply were not allowed through from 11AM-6PM. It certainly can ruin travel plans - which is why I am posting this to give you a "heads up."
[There will be another seemingly all-day closure on 10 August for similar races off Port Huron. Race details are at www.oparacing.org/race5.html —Fleet Captain Jim Acheson]
