Strange (to me) duck behavior

Bill Matley - August 22, 2009

On July 26, 2009 at about 3:00 P.M. my wife and I were cruising southbound on the eastern edge of Clapperton Island about 1.5 miles from it's southern tip.

I was at the helm when I noticed a duck in flight off to our port heading for our boat. I watched the duck come closer and closer and land in the water within 8 feet of our port side just forward of the beam of the boat.

My wife was reading a book and I called her attention to the floating duck that by now was falling behind us as we motored along at about 6.5 knots.

When the duck was about 100 feet behind us she took off from the water and headed directly for our port side landing again within 8 feet of our boat.  I was (still am) dumb founded as Sandi and I watched in amazement while the duck again fell back about 100 feet and took off toward us a second time!

We watched when for the third time the duck again flew at us and again landed within a few feet of the port side just ahead of the beam.

The duck started off again for the fourth time and I went for my camera, recording several more flights and landings.

After the eleventh time, I thought maybe I should offer the poor duck some bread but she never came back.

Has anyone had a similar experience and does anyone have an explanation?

The same thing happened to us several years ago while cruising off Chicago's Monroe Harbor. After the second or third time we gave the duck some bread chunks and after a couple of slices, seemed satisfied, and flew off for the last time. Not even a thank you!
