North Channel Cruise

rbarzyk - June 8, 2009

I'm not sure to whom this is gettings to, for I haven't a clew as to how this all works. I'm planning to cruise the North Channel, leaving  Vemilion,Ohio around July 5th, and allowing approximately 6 weeks to complete the round trip. I'll start in/at Killarney, proceed to Little Current, and then proceed towards the Benjamins,Whaleback, and the ports and gunkholes along the northern porton of the North Channel. I'm skipping Baie Fine, ( been there,) and the McGregor Bay area along  with Whitefish falls. ( not sure that 's a smart move)  Will skip almost all the Manitoulin Bays, ( they don't seem to be as INTERESTING as the north shore )

I have all the paper charts, no radar, or chart plotter. I have PORTS, LAKELAND BOATING and all GLCC port logs although they are out-date since we went to digital format.

I guess my concerns are?

Is skipping McGregor & Whitefish a mistake.? Skipping the Manitoulin Bays?

Are supplies and/or fresh water a concern running along the north side ?

Is leaving you boat  un-attended while gunkholing, vulnerable,   if your aboard a dingy for several hours?

I will finish my trip rounding St. Joseph, and then entering the shipping lanes to De Tour, then on to Mackinaw, and home via the west shore of Lake Huron.

Any info on these questions would be greatly appreciated. Please write morningstar@glwb.net for I'm not sure I know how to retrieve messages from this website.

Thank you

Rich Barzyk

The water quality is best in Little Current and Gore Bay and is generally good in Killarney so long as there is no active dredging in the channel. Groceries excellent in LC and Gore Bay; not much along N Shore before Blind River (I do not know BR or west. We like Bay of Islands even with a 7' draft. Watch shallow water (and "crib" added by NTM) in Spanish. In 20 years of cruising, we have not had a problem leaving our boat.

Make certain that during July and August you tune into Channel 71 at 0900 for news, weather and gossip. You can receive CN (depending on the weather) from about 25 to 30 miles away from Little Current.

Good Sailing!
