New GLCC Director
Chuck Mead has been elected to a 3-year term as Director of the Club. Chuck is from Cincinnati and sails aboard his Tartan 3700, Blue Horizon. Here's a brief biographical account:
"I feel much honored to have been given the opportunity to serve the GLCC members through my newly elected role as a Director. The journey to the present passed through roles as a Port Captain and a member in Wilderness Cruising and Planning committees. Thanks to the many members who urged me to become more involved and to help contribute to the clubs success.
"Sailing has become a significant element in my lifestyle for the past 28 years. Joann, my first sailing partner and now my wife and still sailing partner, and I spent nearly 18 years on a small lake in western Indiana. Our Catalina 22 grew into a 25 footer, then to a 30 footer. Bi-annual trips chartering bigger boats in the Caribbean whet our senses and desire for more adventures cruising. We moved our Catalina 30 sailboat to Sandusky Bay of Lake Erie in 1998 and almost immediately began our love affair with Great Lakes cruising. Retirement provided the opportunity for our first real solo cruise, a month long cruise in 2002 from Sandusky to Toronto on our new Tartan 3700. Totally enamored with sailing the Great Lakes and the recognition of the value of additional seamanship skills, we both attended classes and subsequently received our USCG Captains license in 2003.
"Hearing and reading about the beauty of the North Channel, we quickly made that our destination for the next season. Sharing the idea with several club members, we also heard about the GLCC and the fabulous harbor and cruising information available to the members. We immediately joined the club and set out for our first investigation of the North Channel. Flying the club burgee that year introduced us to the even greater value of club membership, that of meeting other GLCC cruisers and the fellowship they so openly share. We have since attended the all the rendezvous and several of the wilderness rallies, expanding our involvement and friendships within the GLCC.
"Joann and I have now been in all 5 of the Great Lakes and have enjoyed sharing our experiences and encouraging several friends, many of whom we met along the way, to become members of the club. Belonging to the club and being 'in' the club each have their own rewards. Joann is quite active with the IT Committee and I look forward to contributing to the club’s health and success in my new role as a Director. Please join us 'in' the club."
