Bringing a dog

Roger Walko - July 13, 2010

Planning a first time sailing cruise from Cleveland to Les Cheneaux Islands in August with our one year old 85 pound Lab/Chessie mix. Looking for tips in general and specifically for pet friendly dockage areas. Thanks. Roger, Regina, and Charlie Walko

We just returned from a Detroit to Les Cheneaux Islands cruise and took our yellow lab Dakota. The key to happiness for all three of us was exercise for Dakota. We took her swimming virtually every day and particularly in the morning on days we were travelling. When she's tired she is much calmer while we're underway.

If you're interested in details regarding specific harbors you plan to visit send me an e-mail at "sailorbum at comcast dot net."

We have found that almost all of the harbors along your route are dog friendly, with the usual restrictions of keeping the dog on a lead and picking up after them. The exception would be the Detroit Yacht Club, which does not allow a dog's paw to touch their docks. They have to ride in a cart fromt the parking lot to the boat. In the Snows, stop in Hessel and you will find perhaps the most dog friendly dockmaster in the Great Lakes. Gail, is also one of the most people friendly dock masters that you will encounter.

That is good info to have. What kind of a dog is Jake? Any tips for on board issues with the dog?
