The Ironton Ferry

This chain ferry crosses back and forth across the narrows at the north end of the south arm of Lake Charlevoix and does not hesitate to start out from either shore just because a sail boat is approaching.  Apparently his schedule is pressing.  It is disconcerting to have him get underway while you are approaching the crossing, but be prepared to turn circles until he goes by.  Boats should not attempt to cross within 200 feet of the ferry, since his chain extends under the surface fore and aft.  The channel leading out in the main lake is to the right, near the cranes.
