Cruise Ships Return to Great Lakes in 2009

After a minimal season in 2008, cruise ships will be back in the Great Lakes in 2009, with the addition of two new vessels. Their itineraries include stops in Mackinac Island and Manitoulin Island, as well as major cities. News story here...

The Anchor Bay Yachting Association is offering an open seminar for boaters, Wednesday evening, January 21, at the Huron Pointe Yacht Club, Harrison Township. Officers from US Customs and Border Protection and US Border Patrol Officers, as well as officers from the Macomb County Marine Sheriff Division, will be available to discuss and help with the Nexus Program, the I-68 Program, Passport Regulations, and US Custom Decals for boat over 30 feet.

NOAA and the Anchor Bay Yachting Association are offering a severe weather class, Thursday, February 26, 7-9:30 pm, Huron Pointe Yacht Club, Harrison Township. The class covers thunderstorm development and classification and tornado development, among other things. Those who complete the evening class are certified as weather spotters for the National Weather Service. The class is open to all boaters, but space is limited to 80, so reservations are required.

Paddle-to-the-Sea Re-created

The children's book, Paddle-to-the-Sea—about a canoe which transits the Great Lakes and eventually winds up in the ocean—has been popular since it was first published in 1941, read by boaters to their children and grand-children as a great bed-time story.

The voyage of the canoe is now being re-created, and the canoe has been most recently spotted in White Lake, Michigan. Read the newspaper story here...

Monday, November 10, marks the 33rd anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. The Detroit Historical Society's Dossin Great Lakes Maritime Auxiliary will host a remembrance for sailors lost on the Great Lakes at 6 pm at the museum on Belle Isle.
