St. Joseph Bridge Allision

 Yes, we didn't know the word "allision" either, but it's a real word (check your Funk-and-Wagnalls). The 620-foot steamer Manistee allided with a bridge in the channel at St. Joseph, December 29, Michigan. News summary here... The photo shows the steamer in warmer days.

NASA's Image, "Cloud Streets"

 NASA has chosen a couple of Great-Lakes views for their "Image of the Day" recently. On December 28, they offered this view of Lake Micigan with "cloud streets." Full description, along with a higher-resolution image, available on their web site...

 

Derek Hatfield Capsized

After a week of fighting storms alone in the Indian Ocean, Derek Hatfield thought he'd catch a nap. The lone Canadian in the round-the-world race—supported by many GLCC members—was 46 days into the race when his boat capsized. He describes his ordeal here...

First CG Resuce of 2009

The first rescue on the Great Lakes for 2009 occurred on Green Bay. The Coast Guard story is here... And a news story here... Note that the fishermen's vehicles have been left on the ice, with no plans to rescue them.

What Time Is It?
